Preston Harriers' fell running section . Some of our fell runners also do cross country and road
running, but fell running is our main activity. Our junior fell runners are in a
keen fell running section, you can read about them in juniorfellblog
below. Preston Harriers running club was
established in 1881. Mick McLoughlin our chairman of fellblog recently did
the Bob Graham Round. Fell Runners are not as much bothered about PB's as they
are about 3B's ( a local brewery).

Anniversary Waltz
ANNIVERSARY WA! I had been looking forward to this race since I knew it was on the list as it is near many of the hills we walk on when we go to a holiday cottage in Keswick each February, but I didn`t go this year as I went skiing instead! We picked Andrew Harrison up on the way and Dad was driving. We had left in plenty of time as we knew it would be busy with the popular Anniversary Waltz race taking part on the same day. The car park near Stair village hall was in a field and it was just starting to get a little muddy as we arrived...Mum was horrified as we were in her brand new car! But, fell races can equal mud sometimes. However, it wasn`t that bad. Dad shot off quickly to climb Hindscarth and get up to the tops as he wanted to watch the "big" race. Mum, Andrew & I went for a walk on the course, which looked a good one as it climbed up to Skelgill Bank, which is part of the ridge coming away from Cat Bells. BUT, it was so windy on top, as the wind blasted across Derwentwater (coming from the north-east Mum said) we had to crawl on our hands and knees and peoples hats were being blown off, despite it being a very sunny day! Now, this wasn`t in the plan for the day. The route had been marked, the marshals were coming up and some were already there hanging on grimly, but we and other runners were a bit concerned. So, Kenny Stuart went off down the hill quickly to tell HQ what it was like up there as we then got out of the wind and came down. The result was a course change! We were no longer going up to the top and the new route was a bit strange as it lacked a good, runable downhill and had several loops. But, the organisers did the right thing. I didn`t enjoy the course as it didn`t have enough uphill and downhill but was pleased to finish 4th - Andrew had a good run also. Nichola Jackson

Keeping abreast with our Fell Runnners
Lots of fell runners break away from their original running clubs, mainly because they have no interest in track & field, fell running being their main interest. The fell running section of our club decided to have their own website, probably for the same reason. Now a V70, George Arnold is our oldest active fell runner. There are a few more of us close behind! One of our top female road runners, whilst marshalling recently at Chipping Show Fell Race commented on just how friendly fell runners are. |
| Preston Harriers Fell Section :- FELLBLOG is the proud fell running section of the famous Preston Harriers Athletic Club. Our athletic club has been around for well over a hundred years. We like to call it famous because it is what Brendan Foster calls us on BBC athletic programmes. We are well represented in Track & Field presently by our pride & joy, Helen Clitheroe. We also have some accomplished road runners. Our Fell runners are a mixed bunch of beer drinkers, most fell runners seem to be like that! We do run lots of races, as can be seen in the site itself. We have a world record holder Pete Benson, you can read about his feat inside. We are pleased that you have visited our website, which of course is mainly about fell running. If you want to see more about the club, you can visit our main site. Click here |
