Preston Harriers' fell & trail running section . Some of our fell runners also do cross country and road running, but fell running is our main activity.Fell Running tends to be a Northern sport, the Lake District being the main centre for fell runners. The Harriers are the organizers of Paddy's Pole Fell Race, which usually takes place in June. Our junior fell runners are in a keen fell running section, you can read about them in juniorfellblog below. Preston Harriers running club was established in 1881. Mick McLoughlin the chairman of fellblog did the Bob Graham Round in 2005. Fell Runners are not as much bothered about PB's as they are about 3B's ( a local brewery).

Gt Hill Handicap Spring     2007

May 15th   Report by Brian Dearnaley

FELL FOOT ‘O’ --- 75 minute Score event

(Brian’s Birthday Bash)

Many, many thanks for the cards, present and your company on the fells and in the Tillotson’s. The night was the first of three “celebrations” marking my transition from vibrant young fell runner to old age pensioner.

Hope you all enjoyed the run and found the course challenging. The weather certainly helped with navigation, route selection and, of course, the actual running. It was a little different on Wednesday morning when I went to collect the controls. The clouds were sitting on Fell Foot cottage roof and rain was my constant companion, helped on Fairsnape by hailstone. Forgetting to take my map didn’t help for a speedy collection and I certainly met Rick’s criteria for being wet! The morning did, however, have its compensations. I got as close to an owl as I’ve ever been and it made no attempt to fly – obviously as impressed with me as I was with it. I also witnessed three hares “boxing” and numerous sheep huddled tight up against walls.  Who says sheep are daft? They were sheltering whilst I “ran” along their trods!

Nobody managed to collect all the controls (the art of good planning?) but several clipped 9 out of a total of 10. Pete Carter produced the best result of the night with an impressive score of 190 (the maximum possible being 200). Full results:-

Pete Carter 190, Colin Shuttleworth 170, Karen Nash 169 (1 penalty point), Roy Parkinson 159 (1 penalty), Steve & Gregg, 150, Pete McDermott 150, Mick Mc 148 (2 penalties), Bob Nash 140, Robyn & Roger 135 (15 penalties), Jim Doherty 130, Barry & George 130, John (can you make the course harder next time) Griffiths 125 (5 penalties), Matt Chris & Andrew 109 (21 penalties + cuts, bruises and plenty of dirty washing), Joe Howard 105 (5 penalties) and Ben Higginson 67 (33 penalties).

Brian and Eileen

Brian and Eileen treated us all to mountains of butties at the Tillotsons for which we were very grateful. There is a mention of the event on the message board. I partook of Timothy Taylors Golden Bitter & was in my usual trouble.

Now back to On the Fells 2007

Keeping abreast with our Fell Runnners

Lots of fell runners break away from their original running clubs, mainly because they have no interest in track & field, fell running being their main interest. The fell running section of our club decided to have their own website, probably for the same reason. Now a V70, George Arnold is our oldest active fell runner. There are a few more of us close behind! One of our top female road runners, whilst marshalling at Chipping Show Fell Race 2007 commented on just how friendly fell runners are.

Preston Harriers Fell Section :-  FELLBLOG  is the proud fell running section of the famous Preston Harriers Athletic Club. Our athletic club has been around for 126 years. We like to call it famous because it is what Brendan Foster calls us on BBC athletic programmes. We are well represented in Track & Field presently by our pride & joy, Helen Clitheroe.  We also have some accomplished road runners. Our Fell runners are a mixed bunch of beer drinkers, most fell runners seem to be like that! We do run lots of races, as can be seen in the site itself. We have a world record holder Pete Benson, you can read about his feat inside. We are pleased that you have visited our website, which of course is mainly about fell running. The website is based in Riley Green, where the blogger is also Mayor of Riley Green. If you want to see more about the club, you can visit our main site. Click here
