Preston Harriers' fell & trail running section . Some of our fell runners also do cross country and road running, but fell running is our main activity.Fell Running tends to be a Northern sport, the Lake District being the main centre for fell runners. The Harriers are the organizers of Paddy's Pole Fell Race, which usually takes place in June. Our junior fell runners are in a keen fell running section, you can read about them in juniorfellblog below. Preston Harriers running club was established in 1881. Mick McLoughlin the chairman of fellblog did the Bob Graham Round in 2005. Fell Runners are not as much bothered about PB's as they are about 3B's ( a local brewery).

Bronte Way 2006     Report from Steve Jackson

Bronte Way - 8th October 2006 - 8 miles & 1,150` of ascent

I expected to be on my own for this run, as last years squad of Bob Shepherd, Joe Howard and I were depleted by Bobs and Joes unavailability, but David Holmes was met on the warm up at the hamlet of Wycoller.

The race itself is a classic point to point, organised by Keighley & Craven AC and if required, by entering in advance, mini-buses are laid on to transport runners from the finish at Haworth to the start at Wycoller. The flyer for the run, says it is run over terrain that is "drop dead gorgeous"

- it is, it really is! The day was warm and sunny with good visibility and everyone appeared to be looking forward to it.

188 lined up at the start just as a landrover came down the track... very graciously the driver pulled over to allow us to start, although once a bunch of fell runners get lined up, nothing is likely to move them apart from the start hooter.

There was a gradual, sometimes steep pull on a good track, but all run-able, to take us first to Smith Clough Scar and then a wet path around Watersheddies Reservoir. Away from the reservoir, the ground was wet and boggy - why do I always find the muddy bit that swallows me to the knee on runs in this locality?

A steep climb from Ponden Reservoir saw me having to jog and walk fast, but I knew at this stage that I was quicker than last year and as we levelled out, there was a fast, twinkled toed descent (well, it felt like it!) to the famous Bronte Bridge. As it was a nice sunny day, there were lots of tourists and some walkers out who were amazed to see a steady stream of runners heading past them. The route was mostly flat now and there was no-one behind me as I ran with the Keighley & Craven club president. I only knew that because of the encouragement he got at the next road crossing.

A fast descent into the town and then that short climb to finish on the main street outside the pub. Wow, over 3 minutes quicker than last year so I was pleased. Winner Ian Holmes by more than 2 minutes. It`s a shame more Harriers don`t include this one, probably as it is in between the Ian Hodgson and British Fell Relays, but it would be a good warm up prior to the Championship relays at Bowland next year!

1st   Ian Holmes (MV40) - Bingley           49:25

2nd   Lee Athersmith - Skipton              51:41

1st lady  Alison Raw - Durham Fell Runners  61:12

(17th overall)

46th  David Holmes (MV50) Preston   67:36

66th  Steve Jackson (MV45) Preston  70:54

Last finisher 1:58:37, although someone did trot across the car park after this time and ask where the finish was. He had obviously gone down the road into Haworth and would be a contender for any bad navigation award.

Steve Jackson

Nice Report Steve. Sorry Joe & I couldn't come. (It clashed with the day of our choir's American Spirituals concert). You obviously had a good day! We had a good time too, in a different sort of way! Swing Low Sweet Chariot.....................etc!

See last year

Keeping abreast with our Fell Runnners

Lots of fell runners break away from their original running clubs, mainly because they have no interest in track & field, fell running being their main interest. The fell running section of our club decided to have their own website, probably for the same reason. Now a V70, George Arnold is our oldest active fell runner. There are a few more of us close behind! One of our top female road runners, whilst marshalling at Chipping Show Fell Race 2007 commented on just how friendly fell runners are.

Preston Harriers Fell Section :-  FELLBLOG  is the proud fell running section of the famous Preston Harriers Athletic Club. Our athletic club has been around for 126 years. We like to call it famous because it is what Brendan Foster calls us on BBC athletic programmes. We are well represented in Track & Field presently by our pride & joy, Helen Clitheroe.  We also have some accomplished road runners. Our Fell runners are a mixed bunch of beer drinkers, most fell runners seem to be like that! We do run lots of races, as can be seen in the site itself. We have a world record holder Pete Benson, you can read about his feat inside. We are pleased that you have visited our website, which of course is mainly about fell running. The website is based in Riley Green, where the blogger is also Mayor of Riley Green. If you want to see more about the club, you can visit our main site. Click here
