Preston Harriers' fell & trail running section . Some of our fell runners also do cross country and road running, but fell running is our main activity.Fell Running tends to be a Northern sport, the Lake District being the main centre for fell runners. The Harriers are the organizers of Paddy's Pole Fell Race, which usually takes place in June. Our junior fell runners are in a keen fell running section, you can read about them in juniorfellblog below. Preston Harriers running club was established in 1881. Mick McLoughlin the chairman of fellblog did the Bob Graham Round in 2005. Fell Runners are not as much bothered about PB's as they are about 3B's ( a local brewery).

Buttermere Sailbeck  2007

Buttermere 13 May 07

I wasn’t intending to run this race as it seemed a long way to drive and the following weekend I had two races. However, my mountain marathon partner had other ideas and before long I had volunteered to drive and to introduce an orienteering friend to fell racing. The forecast was foul  and we had to negotiate all the cyclists on the Frank Whitton challenge but we arrived in plenty of time and it stayed dry.

The entry list was only small although Bowland were out in force as it was a championship race for them. As we jogged around the start line the sun came out and we were rapidly shedding gear.

The start was a bit fierce up a steep tarmac road but we soon hit the fell.

The weather stayed wonderful, warm and sunny, with stunning views. The race was interesting as the climbs and descents came at intervals  throughout the race. The descents, especially at the end were punishing on the quads. With the finish line in sight the heavens opened, but I didn’t care by then. I was round and had beaten all my friendly rivals. I hadn’t quite managed to beat the Bowland chap I had stuck with for most of the race.

The tea and cake was very welcome and the rain disappeared in time for the prize giving. Julian was chuffed to be 2nd M60 vet in his first race and was less than 2 mins behind Dave Tait. I managed to add more PB vouchers to my collection. I couldn’t walk downstairs on Monday and Tuesday thanks to sore quads but would do the race again, for the scenery if no other reason.
