Preston Harriers' fell & trail running section . Some of our fell runners also do cross country and road running, but fell running is our main activity.Fell Running tends to be a Northern sport, the Lake District being the main centre for fell runners. The Harriers are the organizers of Paddy's Pole Fell Race, which usually takes place in June. Our junior fell runners are in a keen fell running section, you can read about them in juniorfellblog below. Preston Harriers running club was established in 1881. Mick McLoughlin the chairman of fellblog did the Bob Graham Round in 2005. Fell Runners are not as much bothered about PB's as they are about 3B's ( a local brewery).

Report by Pete Benson Preston
Harriers 5th Annual fell race at the Chipping Agricultural Show
attracted its usual small but select field in conditions ideal for fell racing.
62 runners left the arena to loud applause from an appreciative audience. 8
miles and a couple of thousand feet of climbing lay ahead with some muddy
conditions on the fells. Young
Tom Cornthwaite of Blackburn Harriers soon led the field followed by C.Reade (Bowland
fell runners) and T. Taylor of Rossendale in a close 3rd place. At
the summit of Fairsnape Cornthwaite slightly increased the lead whilst the race
for minor honours taking place between Reade and Taylor was joined by Gaskell of
Horwich. Meanwhile
the Ladies race was being headed by C. Geddes of Retford Ac. Who was
establishing a good lead over Cornthwaite
established a 30 second lead as he entered the arena with Reade holding on for 2nd
place Geddes
won the Ladies race convincingly by more than 2 minutes with Dodds holding onto
2nd and Walsh in 3rd place. In 61st and last
place was 72 year old R. Packer of Red Rose runners. There was just one none
finisher. Race
Organiser Maurice Dean was pleased with the outcome as were the show organisers.
A Further Report from the Organiser Maurice Dean CHIPPING SHOW FELL RACEAM/8m/2000ft 27.8.05.Preston Harriers presented the 5th Annual Chipping Show Fell Race held in conjunction with the Chipping and District Agricultural and Horticultural Society. Friday, with Joe’s dormobile going in for a face-lift (re-paint), a quick hitch up of the caravan found the team once again doing the normal routine of establishing S.H.Q. and sorting out the varied course tasks (Joe and Brian). Race day, Soon the office staff, Marie and Eileen, supported with Samantha, had Registration up and running. The commentary box had moved over onto the south side of the Arena, with the grand- stand with drawn to make way for Industrial attractions. One of the distractions prior to the start, was Zena the Warrior Princess, clad in a black leather (Roman), pulling a two man chariot, around the Arena with her Teeth! It all happens at this show. With the cloud base lifting, racing conditions were ideal, apart from the damp fields to the base of the fell section. The RaceSlotted into the non-stop activities of the main Arena, the 62 competitors streamed out of the Showground encouraged by the cheering spectators, and followed by R Packer (Red Rose) giving all and sundry a 50yds start. Keeping abreast with our Fell Runnners
Lots of fell runners break away from their original running clubs, mainly because they have no interest in track & field, fell running being their main interest. The fell running section of our club decided to have their own website, probably for the same reason. Now a V70, George Arnold is our oldest active fell runner. There are a few more of us close behind! One of our top female road runners, whilst marshalling at Chipping Show Fell Race 2007 commented on just how friendly fell runners are.

Preston Harriers Fell Section :- FELLBLOG is the proud fell running section of the famous Preston Harriers Athletic Club. Our athletic club has been around for 126 years. We like to call it famous because it is what Brendan Foster calls us on BBC athletic programmes. We are well represented in Track & Field presently by our pride & joy, Helen Clitheroe. We also have some accomplished road runners. Our Fell runners are a mixed bunch of beer drinkers, most fell runners seem to be like that! We do run lots of races, as can be seen in the site itself. We have a world record holder Pete Benson, you can read about his feat inside. We are pleased that you have visited our website, which of course is mainly about fell running. The website is based in Riley Green, where the blogger is also Mayor of Riley Green. If you want to see more about the club, you can visit our main site. Click here |
