Preston Harriers' fell & trail running section . Some of our fell runners also do cross country and road running, but fell running is our main activity.Fell Running tends to be a Northern sport, the Lake District being the main centre for fell runners. The Harriers are the organizers of Paddy's Pole Fell Race, which usually takes place in June. Our junior fell runners are in a keen fell running section, you can read about them in juniorfellblog below. Preston Harriers running club was established in 1881. Mick McLoughlin the chairman of fellblog did the Bob Graham Round in 2005. Fell Runners are not as much bothered about PB's as they are about 3B's ( a local brewery).

Crowden Horseshoe Junior Fell Race

Fell Runners Association - Junior Championships 2005

6th and Final Race at Crowden, Saturday 3rd September

The Junior show moved on to Crowden in the Peak District with the Youth Hostel being race HQ. The visitors staying at the nearby camp site - turned into a car park - must have been wondering what on earth was going on!

Conditions were perfect... a bright sunny day, but with a good breeze on the fells. Underfoot was firm and dry.

The various routes were to climb different courses up towards Lads Leap. First off in the U12s was Matthew Nash who finished in a great third spot over the 2 mile course. Matthew completed in 8:25, whilst first was Tom Doyle (Helm Hill) in 8:12.

In the U14s, Preston had two representatives over the

3 mile course. Andrew Harrison was 22nd overall in

13:14 (18th boy) and Nichola Jackson was 23rd in 13:18(5th girl.) Nichola took a "tremendous tumble"

near the end (quote from FRA junior co-ordinator Dave

Woodhead) which Dad didn`t see as he was high on the fell taking pictures!

In the U16s Aime Kevan ran a dogged and extremely determined race, in what had now become much warmer conditions, over 3.5 miles to finish 30th overall

The prize-giving took place in the camping field, as there were so many present. The customary shoe-draw took place and there were spot prizes for some of the non-top three runners in each category. There were also plenty of chocolate give-aways for the runners!

The series prize giving, with lots of fun on the day (and the emphasis is on the fun!) takes place at Spooky Do 2 on 30th October at the International Hotel, Skipton.

Everyone who has taken part has had a good time and the Junior Organisers, Dave & Eileen Woodhead from Keighley are worth their weight in gold for their work and efforts.

It is worth noting here the final series places and Preston Harriers athletes contributions.

Although there is no series prize for the U10s, Christopher Hash ran in two races.

Scores are based on your best 4 from 6 races. In the

U12 boys, Matthew Nash finished 7th with lots of promise. In U14, Andrew Harrison in the boys was 28th, completing all six events. Nichola Jackson was 9th girl, again completing all six. Emily Kevan was 24th.

Other competitors who ran in the first race were Verity Cook, Naomi Cox and Beth Summerfield.

In U16 girls, Amie Kevan was 11th. In the U16 boys, Rob Jackson was 5th, completing four races.

Keeping abreast with our Fell Runnners

Lots of fell runners break away from their original running clubs, mainly because they have no interest in track & field, fell running being their main interest. The fell running section of our club decided to have their own website, probably for the same reason. Now a V70, George Arnold is our oldest active fell runner. There are a few more of us close behind! One of our top female road runners, whilst marshalling at Chipping Show Fell Race 2007 commented on just how friendly fell runners are.

Preston Harriers Fell Section :-  FELLBLOG  is the proud fell running section of the famous Preston Harriers Athletic Club. Our athletic club has been around for 126 years. We like to call it famous because it is what Brendan Foster calls us on BBC athletic programmes. We are well represented in Track & Field presently by our pride & joy, Helen Clitheroe.  We also have some accomplished road runners. Our Fell runners are a mixed bunch of beer drinkers, most fell runners seem to be like that! We do run lots of races, as can be seen in the site itself. We have a world record holder Pete Benson, you can read about his feat inside. We are pleased that you have visited our website, which of course is mainly about fell running. The website is based in Riley Green, where the blogger is also Mayor of Riley Green. If you want to see more about the club, you can visit our main site. Click here
