Preston Harriers' fell running section . Some of our fell runners also do cross country and road running, but fell running is our main activity. Our junior fell runners are in a keen fell running section, you can read about them in juniorfellblog below. Preston Harriers running club was established in 1881. Mick McLoughlin our chairman of fellblog recently did the Bob Graham Round. Fell Runners are not as much bothered about PB's as they are about 3B's ( a local brewery).

Crowden

The final junior championship fell race of 2006 rolled into a very wet Crowden on the 2nd Sept. Conditions in the Peak were truly awful... a strong, gusting wind and heavy rain, which quickly turned the course into slippery, muddy surface.

Pre Race Waiting in the rain! Nichola & Andrew. (Managing to smile).

The Climb ahead................... The U12 start

Very windy conditions, Andrew & Nichola prevail                        Nichola works her way up.

Only Andrew Harrison & Nichola Jackson, both at U14, were present for the final race and overall numbers were a bit down. No doubt the weather & forecast played a part for some who decided to give this one a miss - the same day last year was a lovely & sunny, with families having picnics at the campsite...

Fortunately the wind kept the fells clear of cloud and the U10s and 12s had to deal with the rain, which stopped just before the U14s set off. I`d left Colin Harrison as kit man and Mick McLoughlin on umbrella duty as I shot off up the fell to try and get some pictures. Progress further up was difficult because of the strength of the wind. The U14s were on a three mile course almost to the top of Lads Leap.

Andrew Mudclaws his way down.                                                                        Young Michael McLaughlin & Gordon Thompson

Times were a bit immaterial really on such a day; everyone who ran in all the events did so well to get round and several took tumbles because of the underfoot conditions. Andrews` new Inov 8 mudclaws coped briliantly - a sound investment by Colin and Andrew came home 15th boy. Nichola was 5th girl.

The final tables have yet to be properly updated with the best four from six to count. Mention must go to everyone who has had a go apart from Andrew & Nichola; Emily & Amie Kevan and Chris and Matt Nash.

Nichola and I then saw Gordon Thompson and Mick off on their race of 5.9 miles & 1700` ascent. We had an overnight planned in Chesterfield for the Spire 10 miler on Sunday - it poured down as we drove on. The following day, in bright sunshine, but still windy, saw Nichola finish 7th in the 2 mile run and I had my adventure with hills and strong winds to record 73:59.

Keeping abreast with our Fell Runnners

Lots of fell runners break away from their original running clubs, mainly because they have no interest in track & field, fell running being their main interest. The fell running section of our club decided to have their own website, probably for the same reason. Now a V70, George Arnold is our oldest active fell runner. There are a few more of us close behind! One of our top female road runners, whilst marshalling recently at Chipping Show Fell Race commented on just how friendly fell runners are.

Preston Harriers Fell Section :-  FELLBLOG  is the proud fell running section of the famous Preston Harriers Athletic Club. Our athletic club has been around for well over a hundred years. We like to call it famous because it is what Brendan Foster calls us on BBC athletic programmes. We are well represented in Track & Field presently by our pride & joy, Helen Clitheroe.  We also have some accomplished road runners. Our Fell runners are a mixed bunch of beer drinkers, most fell runners seem to be like that! We do run lots of races, as can be seen in the site itself. We have a world record holder Pete Benson, you can read about his feat inside. We are pleased that you have visited our website, which of course is mainly about fell running. If you want to see more about the club, you can visit our main site. Click here
