Preston Harriers' fell & trail running section . Some of our fell runners also do cross country and road running, but fell running is our main activity.Fell Running tends to be a Northern sport, the Lake District being the main centre for fell runners. The Harriers are the organizers of Paddy's Pole Fell Race, which usually takes place in June. Our junior fell runners are in a keen fell running section, you can read about them in juniorfellblog below. Preston Harriers running club was established in 1881. Mick McLoughlin the chairman of fellblog did the Bob Graham Round in 2005. Fell Runners are not as much bothered about PB's as they are about 3B's ( a local brewery).

FRA Relay 2006   Report from Mick Mack

FRA Relays. Saturday 14th October.

After all the hassle of getting two teams sorted it was a relief to be at the venue above Hebdon Bridge in the South Pennines on a great day for running, the weather and scenery superb. We were situated in a valley with two reservoirs, the start and change over on the lower one and all the legs crossed the higher one, so it was ideal for spectators.

Unfortunately we had to shuffle the teams before the start and Gordon and Eddy found themselves on the start line at 10.30 for Leg 1, 5.9m/1480’.

Both coped well on a tough course which had a number of short steep climbs and descents and an uphill finish to the dam. Gordon was 57th in 53.30 while Eddy was 109th in 1.08.01.

Leg 2, 9.4m/2350’ was in pairs Ash + Will and Karen + Roger. Another tough leg which went out and back into the valley three times with long sections on the tops. Ash and Will returned in 59th in 1.33.14, total time 2.26.44. Karen and Roger were 110th in 2.00.55, total time 3.08.56. Roger suffered on this long leg as he has just recovered from a bout of the measles.

Leg 3 was the navigation leg in pairs where things can go astray if route choice is not accurate but both pairs had good runs and managed to pull back some places. Dave Holmes and I finished in 45th place 1.19.05, total time 3.45.49. Pete and Steve F were now 96th in 1.28.45, total time 4.37.41. The navigation wasn’t too difficult and I really enjoyed the run, though some teams were all over the place.

Leg 4 was the reverse of Leg 1, 5.9m/1480’ and the honour went to Steve B and Robyn, who stepped in at the last minute to fill the open team. Steve had a good run and pulled back two places to 43rd and complete in 55.31, total time 4.41.20. Robyn kept up a steady pace to finish 96th in 1.13.59, total time 5.51.40. Well done everyone.

Result,

1st Bingley, 3.44.53 (who came from 14th after Leg 1 to 1st on the last leg).

43rd Preston Vets 4.41.20.

96th Preston Open 5.51.40

118 teams started, 111 finished.

Pictures from Peter Kevan. (Gordon as usual too fast for the camera.

There are 220 more pictures on the Calder Valley Fell Runners website    Plus all sorts of other stuff (Thanks Peter Carter)

Keeping abreast with our Fell Runnners

Lots of fell runners break away from their original running clubs, mainly because they have no interest in track & field, fell running being their main interest. The fell running section of our club decided to have their own website, probably for the same reason. Now a V70, George Arnold is our oldest active fell runner. There are a few more of us close behind! One of our top female road runners, whilst marshalling at Chipping Show Fell Race 2007 commented on just how friendly fell runners are.

Preston Harriers Fell Section :-  FELLBLOG  is the proud fell running section of the famous Preston Harriers Athletic Club. Our athletic club has been around for 126 years. We like to call it famous because it is what Brendan Foster calls us on BBC athletic programmes. We are well represented in Track & Field presently by our pride & joy, Helen Clitheroe.  We also have some accomplished road runners. Our Fell runners are a mixed bunch of beer drinkers, most fell runners seem to be like that! We do run lots of races, as can be seen in the site itself. We have a world record holder Pete Benson, you can read about his feat inside. We are pleased that you have visited our website, which of course is mainly about fell running. The website is based in Riley Green, where the blogger is also Mayor of Riley Green. If you want to see more about the club, you can visit our main site. Click here
