Preston Harriers' fell & trail running section . Some of our fell runners also do cross country and road running, but fell running is our main activity.Fell Running tends to be a Northern sport, the Lake District being the main centre for fell runners. The Harriers are the organizers of Paddy's Pole Fell Race, which usually takes place in June. Our junior fell runners are in a keen fell running section, you can read about them in juniorfellblog below. Preston Harriers running club was established in 1881. Mick McLoughlin the chairman of fellblog did the Bob Graham Round in 2005. Fell Runners are not as much bothered about PB's as they are about 3B's ( a local brewery).

The Harrier Magazine  Now Also Interactive!

Harrier Magazine Feb 2006 is the first edition to go interactive, so it isn't all that good.

While looking at this page it might help to also have your Harrier to hand!

This interactivity allows the editor to open up to the readers some of the difficulties of the job. The main difficulty & I believe it always has been, is to get people to contribute articles. This edition had a crop of the usual contributors to whom I am very grateful. Without you there would be no Harrier. We need more like you.

Within a short while of me completing the magazine, Alan Appleby arrived with a super article & loads of pictures, re Northern XC. Sadly they were too late for publication, so it gives us all the opportunity to now read Alan's piece & see his pictures in full colour. Felicity Cross sent us some pictures of  Sunday 29th Jan. Ladies Group fell running, they arrived by email, about one hour after I'd sent the Harrier to the printer. I can now show them also.

Front Cover

The picture on the front cover of Helen at 10k (with lucky Steve Hallas), is from Tony Croft at Fylde. We are grateful for that & here's another one he sent. (This was in the Gym awaiting presentation).

& these two were from blogger's camera. As always Helen's too quick for me. Here she is, there she's gone.

Helen gets her Course Record Bonus (again!)

Helen of course will be running at Melbourne in the Commonwealth Games. We will be glued to our seats supporting her.

N.O.E.A.A. 2006 Great North Cross Country Championships

The Harriers looked to have a strong U17 mens team this year and so it proved as Nathan Bibby came home 5th in the 6km race, the first of our counters. Peter Street put in a good performance to come home 14th with Dominic Baxter and Rob Jackson just 4 seconds apart in 29th and 32nd completing those to count. David Rigby, 54th, and Rob Walsh, 118th completed the team which came second place behind Leeds for silver. (151 took part).

Only two U13 girls took part, Nicola Jackson coming in 80th after losing a shoe at the end of the start straight, but gamely carrying on, and Jess Crook 99th giving a good steady run. (179 took part)

In the U15 boys Matt Lloyd had a great run to come in 6th, with Matt Davison closely followed by Ben Anthony in 44th and 54th respectively putting in good efforts and Matt Wadsworth having a good run for 113th to complete the counters. Lewis Robinson not at his best came in 148th and James Walsh 168th, also James Davies dug in for 187th spot and completed the team which came seventh. (199 took part)

Our senior women fielded a team of Philippa Walsh 37th, Marion Hesketh 85th,Emma Deakin 96th, Sarah Gohil 101st coming in eleventh. All the ladies came back to the tent quite exhausted after giving their all, tales of sticky mud, gales by the river, and three times up that bloody hill ! Well done ladies. (244 took part)

A depleted U15 girls were led home by Sophie Fletcher 103rd , with Emily Kevan 147th , and Georgia Robbins 149th, good efforts by the girls and not a moan from them. (163 took part)

We had two good performances in the U13 boys but once again we lacked numbers for a team. Richard Morrell was 15th , closely followed by Kristian Bibby 25th . Well done lads.

Kate Hindle was our first counter in the U17 women giving a good performance to come 7th, with Steph Roe not far behind in 19th spot. Georgina Burton gave a good effort to come 93rd, once again we lacked a team.

The Senior men competing were Steve Hallas 88th, Matt Livingstone 91st, (you nearly had him Matt). Dave Partington 116th, Ray Kenny 180th, Kevin Hesketh 242nd, John Rainford 281st, (I’ll have to keep quiet about that run), Dave Watson 291st, Ash Nixon 297th, Steve Jackson 436th, well done chaps it looked hard ! (579 took part).

We only had one U20 woman, Clare Kane, who though not at her best gave a gutsy run for 32nd spot.

There were no U20 men from the Harriers

Keeping abreast with our Fell Runnners

Lots of fell runners break away from their original running clubs, mainly because they have no interest in track & field, fell running being their main interest. The fell running section of our club decided to have their own website, probably for the same reason. Now a V70, George Arnold is our oldest active fell runner. There are a few more of us close behind! One of our top female road runners, whilst marshalling at Chipping Show Fell Race 2007 commented on just how friendly fell runners are.

Preston Harriers Fell Section :-  FELLBLOG  is the proud fell running section of the famous Preston Harriers Athletic Club. Our athletic club has been around for 126 years. We like to call it famous because it is what Brendan Foster calls us on BBC athletic programmes. We are well represented in Track & Field presently by our pride & joy, Helen Clitheroe.  We also have some accomplished road runners. Our Fell runners are a mixed bunch of beer drinkers, most fell runners seem to be like that! We do run lots of races, as can be seen in the site itself. We have a world record holder Pete Benson, you can read about his feat inside. We are pleased that you have visited our website, which of course is mainly about fell running. The website is based in Riley Green, where the blogger is also Mayor of Riley Green. If you want to see more about the club, you can visit our main site. Click here
