Preston Harriers' fell running section . Some of our fell runners also do cross country and road
running, but fell running is our main activity. Our junior fell runners are in a
keen fell running section, you can read about them in juniorfellblog
below. Preston Harriers running club was
established in 1881. Mick McLoughlin our chairman of fellblog recently did
the Bob Graham Round. Fell Runners are not as much bothered about PB's as they
are about 3B's ( a local brewery).

HELEN CLITHEROE'S JUNIOR LOG BOOK APPEAL FOR FUNDING 2006
Including Appeal for 125th Anniversary Commemorative Booklet
In this our 125th Anniversary Year we are hoping to fund two memorable publications. Helen kindly offered to help in any way she could, & I lumbered her with the momentous task of mailing everybody from Melbourne! The card that most will have received by now, is the start of our appeal. This mailing from Melbourne must be a unique effort from an International Athlete of Helen's stature. We are all deeply grateful to her for showing such interest and wanting to help this way. You can imagine that this single card alone is an expensive commitment,(50p for postage), but was done with no time for planning, just willingness to help from Helen. A donation from you towards this cost would be very much appreciated. If you wish to support in this way, you may like to purchase the six pack (below), and add on what you want to cover the Melbourne Mail. Alan Appleby & Maurice Dean have both worked hard for the club over many years, & now they are embarking on projects that will surely immortalize them in the memories of all members. Alan is busy compiling a Junior Log Training Log Book. Most Juniors are encouraged to buy their own notebooks in which they can jot down their activities on a daily basis. This new log book will encourage them further, & fomalize by use of pictures & diagrams, their daily jottings. It will instill values and generally uplift the Juniors' spirits. They will be pleased with their weekly performances & at the end of a year will have something for which they can justly be proud. Also, Helen's picture will be in the log, what better way of encouragement? Here is a glimpse of work in progress! (Just two of the 52 pages to be included in the training log).
There are also valuable sections of interest in the manual, stretching exercises, injury assistance, perfect performance pictures & lots of other ideas. One thing missing is the money to produce the log book. Alan has been working towards producing this for a long time. I hope he achieves it in this our special year.
Alan Appleby hopes to get the Junior Log Book into print soon. Meanwhile, Maurice is working on his Harriers' History. You have seen one or two golden oldie pictures in the Harrier Magazine (newsletter) recently and Maurice is working towards bringing our history together in a 125th Anniversary Brochure. The first big anniversary brochure was produced by Malcolm Withnell 50 years ago. In those days they thought they were celebrating the half century, when indeed it was the 75th. (Thanks to research by our archivist Maurice Dean).
Jack Higginson our Olympian in 1924 & a young Helen Pattinson chased by Tiffany Moorcroft in 1990 Maurice, our archivist, seen above at the Presentation Evening last November, is hoping to put together his History of the Harriers, in this our special year. You can see more of Maurice's work at Memory Lane on the website. You can help the Juniors by purchasing the set of six postcards (above) produced especially for this, our special year. They are on sale at £4.00 per set and are put together in a wallet which will help keep them in pristine condition. Just imagine the Juniors of today showing these cards to their children in 25 years time, on our 150th anniversary! if you can't find the cards anywhere, ask Alan Appleby.
If this series is popular, another set of six is possibly on the cards. Pun unintended. Any ideas are welcome from members, parents, coaches............... anybody. Individual postcards are also available. More on the subject can be read in The Harrier. Individual postcards, to the same high quality as the above, are available. However there has to be a minimum order quantity of 12. Juniors might want to send them to their pen pals or grandmas, etc. 12 in wallet, cost £9.00. Proceeds go to the appeal. (This was Joe Howard's idea). Any other ideas will be considered. Steve Bamber's History Channel suggestion has proved too expensive and consequently has been presently put on the back burner.

Keeping abreast with our Fell Runnners
Lots of fell runners break away from their original running clubs, mainly because they have no interest in track & field, fell running being their main interest. The fell running section of our club decided to have their own website, probably for the same reason. Now a V70, George Arnold is our oldest active fell runner. There are a few more of us close behind! One of our top female road runners, whilst marshalling recently at Chipping Show Fell Race commented on just how friendly fell runners are. |
| Preston Harriers Fell Section :- FELLBLOG is the proud fell running section of the famous Preston Harriers Athletic Club. Our athletic club has been around for well over a hundred years. We like to call it famous because it is what Brendan Foster calls us on BBC athletic programmes. We are well represented in Track & Field presently by our pride & joy, Helen Clitheroe. We also have some accomplished road runners. Our Fell runners are a mixed bunch of beer drinkers, most fell runners seem to be like that! We do run lots of races, as can be seen in the site itself. We have a world record holder Pete Benson, you can read about his feat inside. We are pleased that you have visited our website, which of course is mainly about fell running. If you want to see more about the club, you can visit our main site. Click here |
