2005 UPDATE #2

Marco Germanetto Memorial Race, Pian del Frais, Susa ( Turin ), June 26 2005

The Marco Germanetto Memorial race will replace the Black Forest Teenager Games.  The race is over an ‘up-and-down’ 1400m loop.  There are separate U17 male and U17 female races with the ‘boys’ competing over three laps and the ‘girls’ over two laps.  In 2004 the ‘girls’ race was won in 11:20 and the ‘boys’ in 15:25.  Last year Italy , Slovenia , Germany and Austria sent teams.  I expect with the cancellation of the BFTG there’ll be additional support this year.  Both Wales and Scotland are planning to send teams.

The Slovenians who just finished ahead of Rosie, Blue and Danielle at last year’s BFTG were first and second in the 2004 ‘girls’ race (they also finished 2nd and 3rd in last year’s World Torphy).  Take a look at http://www.atleticasusa.it/rules_memor.htm for background (inc. prizes) and the results – you might recognise some names from last year’s BFTG and World Trophy.

This year we’ll take a squad of 12 athletes (6 boys and 6 girls) and effectively compete as England A and England B teams.  Selection is open to runners born in 1988 – 1993 (inclusive).  There will be a Trials Race over Ilkley Moor on Sunday June 5th (start from the top of Wells Rd. , Ilkley – GR 115470).  Contact Shirley Wood, 1 Daisy Hill, Addingham, Ilkley LS29 0PN, tel: 01943 831765 for full course details (these will also be posted on www.ilkleyharriers.org.uk).

There will be automatic selection for the first four boys and first four girls in the Trials Races.  The remaining places will be filled at the discretion of the selectors based on current form.  Athletes wishing to be considered for selection must register their interest and provide Steve Fletcher (see below for contact details) with details of the form they wish to be taken into account by 12:00 Sunday June 5th.
