Advert from Colin Harrison follows!

Kendal Winter League 2005 and an Advert for Wray Fell Race In May

This series of fell races around Kendal, Settle and Lancaster has been an excellent opportunity for the young athletes of Preston Harriers to give fell running a try in a very friendly environment.

For Matthew and Chris Nash it has been a stepping-stone to the English Fell Championship of 2005.

In Chris’s case a fabulous first finish in the Under 10’s and an equally spectacular second finish for Matt. After trying these races out last year Andrew Harrison last year came 8th in the English. Influenced by Richard Shuttleworth a super 3rd in his age group. Harriers have plenty of juniors giving it a go- Rob Jackson had just one race and with a top 10 finish got the bug. Emily Kevan had plenty of top 10 finishes, as did her sister Amie who finished the year 6th overall.  There were also good runs from Kara Shuttleworth and Stephanie Roe in the Blue, White and Red of Preston Harriers.

For anybody who wants to give it a try and has an hour or two to spare then check out the attached pictures and if you were not sold before then fell running may just be for you. What more than beautiful scenery, nice running conditions and clear fresh air like you have never tasted-no wonder the senior guys get so thirsty!!!! The Under 14 girls have had a great turn out recently so the publicity is working.

It is not about results at this level but the fun of running and the friendliness of everyone around. Even for the under 10’s with well marshalled and flagged courses many even give it a good go in trainers and a T-shirt to start with before the investment in a pair of Walshies-picture attached.

A fabulous race is coming up on May 2nd at Wray just north of Lancaster-not only very well supported with much of the Junior course through the Village but more with a family fair with Coconut Shies and displays of birds of prey. With even more as many houses are decorated with scarecrows but yet more as there are lots of prizes usually from Reebok of hats and bags and T-shirts.

So if you were only slightly tempted before then grab your family and take them to Wray in May. There is a senior race to but that sets off first so the main event is the juniors. Senior take your younger family members and juniors get mum, dad, grandma or grandpa away from the house or the shops. Forgot to mention there is a miniature steam train there too and of course for the older ones plenty of places for a cold frothy drink

Happy running and much enjoyment. Good luck on getting the bug for fun and fresh air. Plenty more have with the help of Alan Appleby so you could be next. You may even get your picture on the website or even in the Harrier Magazine.
