Preston Harriers' fell & trail running section . Some of our fell runners also do cross country and road running, but fell running is our main activity.Fell Running tends to be a Northern sport, the Lake District being the main centre for fell runners. The Harriers are the organizers of Paddy's Pole Fell Race, which usually takes place in June. Our junior fell runners are in a keen fell running section, you can read about them in juniorfellblog below. Preston Harriers running club was established in 1881. Mick McLoughlin the chairman of fellblog did the Bob Graham Round in 2005. Fell Runners are not as much bothered about PB's as they are about 3B's ( a local brewery).

Longridge Fell Uphill Time Trial            Steve Taylor.

Date:                   Tue. 10th July

21 runners set off for the 0.9 miles, 582ft climb to the summit of Longridge Fell. Setting off at 30 second intervals, having already estimated a finish time and running without watches, all runners had a chance of picking up a prize if they guessed nearest to their actual finish time.
A few runners had set off when the drama began. John Griffiths had pulled a calf on the 1½ mile warm up from the car park to the start. Then Chris Livesey turned up late having had difficulty finding the car park and then where we had all disappeared to. I’ll need to speak to his dad and find out why he never taught him how to navigate. Chris took John’s number and his estimated time.
So Chris how did you manage to win the handicap, with a 2 sec. time difference and win the race? I’ve never known that to happen before. Well done to Chris, with a bit of help from John’s estimated time. Similarly Alan Metcalf finished 3rd in both categories. Splitting this pair was Brian, with a 9 sec time difference. Rumour has it he had been out on a recce run the night before, which obviously helped him, but didn’t seem to do much good for Eileen down in 12th place and 69 secs. out.

Apologies to Mali , who I had failed to notice was in 4th equal place with Robyn, so didn’t get the credit she deserved or a prize at the presentation. Not sure how I could split a pair of Running Bear socks with Robyn, but I’ll find you something.

A time handicap race isn’t complete without some sort of recognition for the person with the worst time difference. So I brought a cuckoo clock back from Austria last week and I hope it may help Dave Roberts come up with a better estimate the next time. Dave was 5min 37 secs out, but it was nice to see one of the original group of Preston Harriers fell runners back running after an absence of many years.

Although this race isn’t really about the fast runners, young Andrew Harrison had a brilliant run to dip under 10 mins on a course that was not only steep, but very heavy going in places after all the rain. He was only beaten by Chris who can claim the course record on what, I believe, to be the first ever race on Longridge Fell, which is, I believe, the most southerly named ‘Fell’ in Britain.

Hope you all enjoyed it. Any feedback would be welcome. Shall we make it an annual event?
Steve Taylor

To be fair to Chris, he did ask me just where was the car park! I explained that I usually have a tour of Ribchester & district before I eventually find it.................. In addition, it's thanks to Chris we have our new look fell section website.

Now back to On the Fells 2007

Keeping abreast with our Fell Runnners

Lots of fell runners break away from their original running clubs, mainly because they have no interest in track & field, fell running being their main interest. The fell running section of our club decided to have their own website, probably for the same reason. Now a V70, George Arnold is our oldest active fell runner. There are a few more of us close behind! One of our top female road runners, whilst marshalling at Chipping Show Fell Race 2007 commented on just how friendly fell runners are.

Preston Harriers Fell Section :-  FELLBLOG  is the proud fell running section of the famous Preston Harriers Athletic Club. Our athletic club has been around for 126 years. We like to call it famous because it is what Brendan Foster calls us on BBC athletic programmes. We are well represented in Track & Field presently by our pride & joy, Helen Clitheroe.  We also have some accomplished road runners. Our Fell runners are a mixed bunch of beer drinkers, most fell runners seem to be like that! We do run lots of races, as can be seen in the site itself. We have a world record holder Pete Benson, you can read about his feat inside. We are pleased that you have visited our website, which of course is mainly about fell running. The website is based in Riley Green, where the blogger is also Mayor of Riley Green. If you want to see more about the club, you can visit our main site. Click here
