Pennine Bridleway Relay. Sunday 12th Feb. 47m / 6300’ in 5 stages.
B
Team.
After a few withdrawals due to injury, a lot of phone calls and juggling of runners I handed in the B team sheet at 7.50am, quietly confident we would do well. I was completely unaware of what was happening back in Preston due to a last minute withdrawal due to illness. On leg 1 was the dependable pairing of Alan Appleby and Dave Cross, they again had a blinding run, covering the 8.5 miles in 1:10:50 handing over in 23rd position to Nick Conlon and myself. The good start encouraged us to give it all on this the toughest leg. See the before and after photos on our web page. We completed the 12.5 miles in 1:42:42, faster than last year but dropped 4 places to 27th. I was surprised to handover to Joe instead of Steve Foster, who had taken ill overnight, but again on the tough 3rd leg Joe and Dave Holmes produced a fine run, given the very steep start, to take 1:32:44 over the 9.5 miles, we were now in 34th position. Our aces in the pack, Phillippa Walsh and Neil McDonald now took over for the fast leg 4. They completed the 5.5 miles in 0:43:54, 19th fastest overall on the day, pulling back 3 places. The final leg had the regular pairing of Pete Carter and Jim Doherty, who bettered last year’s time, covering the 11 miles in 1:32:12. We finished in 33rd position out of 46, our overall time faster than last year. Thanks to everyone who volunteered to run a leg, and to all who stepped in on short notice. This is a great relay race and suits all disciplines, road, cross-country and fells. Lets get more teams out next year, just look at the happy faces on the web page.
For the record: -
1st Borrowdale 4:56:37
10th Preston A 5:22:10
33rd Preston B 6:42:22
46 finished.
