Preston Harriers' fell & trail running section . Some of our fell runners also do cross country and road running, but fell running is our main activity.Fell Running tends to be a Northern sport, the Lake District being the main centre for fell runners. The Harriers are the organizers of Paddy's Pole Fell Race, which usually takes place in June. Our junior fell runners are in a keen fell running section, you can read about them in juniorfellblog below. Preston Harriers running club was established in 1881. Mick McLoughlin the chairman of fellblog did the Bob Graham Round in 2005. Fell Runners are not as much bothered about PB's as they are about 3B's ( a local brewery).

Preston Harriers Fell Section :- juniorfellblog
JUNIOR FELL RELAY CHAMPIONSHIPS 2005 Sedbergh September 24th The event was organised by Helm Hill Runners with support from the FRA Junior Co-Ordinators, Dave & Eileen Woodhead. (aka the woodentops) Preston Harriers had three teams of 3 runners each out for this event, thanks to the persuasive powers of Alan Appleby. For some of the team members, it was their first fell running outing and their all round commitment and ability was there for all to see. Perhaps there was some hesitation on arrival... "We`re not going up there are we?" - "Well, not quite to the top but you are, Sophie as you're running the U16 leg!" said I.Not daunted, off went most of the team to recce the route with Alan and also Mick and Gordon from the senior fell runners who had turned up to offer valued support. Parents and supporters took up their positions at various points on the course for a noon start, as cloud threatened from the west and the odd shower fell. One shower was though, an absolute cloudburst for a few minutes and the runners out at that time got drenched. All the teams ran three legs of varying length on the slopes of Winder or to the top of it. Winder has a height of 473m, with a Millennium viewfinder and cairn atop it, although the runners chose to ignore this attraction. Leg 1 runners were the U12s who ran a distance of 1.5m.Leg 2 for the U14s was 2 miles and the U16s was 2.5 miles. More height is climbed for each leg. The descents became slippery and muddy as the day wore on, because of the weather. The Boys team was Matthew Nash, Andrew Harrison and Rob Jackson. Their overall time was 57:52 and brought them home fourth for prizes and medals. The cumulative times were Matthew (13:00); Andrew (34:39); Rob (57:52)Girls A was Ellen Buckley, Nichola Jackson and Sophie Fletcher. An overall time of 71:22 was made up of Ellen (16:16); Nichola (38:40) and Sophie (71:22) They just missed third by less than one second and were very disappointed but it was a great effort. Disappointment was compounded as the team were not eligible for a fourth place medal and prize as we had to run one runner out of age group, but was not above the U16 age. The organisers have said they`ll look at this for next year, as it would further encourage teams to take part. Girls B was Becky, Emily Kevan and Amie Kevan. An overall time of 77:33 was posted and was a fantastic effort. The added times were Becky (18:33); Emily (46:22); Amie (77:33) The prize giving and chocolate throw out took place in the Peoples Hall before the senior race afterwards. All runners received a medal for taking part and there was a splendid variety of sandwiches, cakes and other goodies on offer. Thank you to all who took part and we hope you enjoyed it. Grateful and very sincere thanks must go to all the parents who get involved and who brought the juniors as without your efforts, nothing is possible. Thank you. Oh, the senior race... well it was 4 miles and 1175` of brutish ascent up Crook and onto Arant Haw. The ridge run to Winder was a joy. The descent, where everybody went their own way was either dramatically steep or not quite, well, depending on where you went really. Runners were Karen Nash, Gordon Thompson, Alan Appleby and Steve Jackson. No doubt someone will be sending in pre and post race pics, although I hope that pain in my thighs recedes soon!

Keeping abreast with our Fell Runnners
Lots of fell runners break away from their original running clubs, mainly because they have no interest in track & field, fell running being their main interest. The fell running section of our club decided to have their own website, probably for the same reason. Now a V70, George Arnold is our oldest active fell runner. There are a few more of us close behind! One of our top female road runners, whilst marshalling at Chipping Show Fell Race 2007 commented on just how friendly fell runners are.

Preston Harriers Fell Section :- FELLBLOG is the proud fell running section of the famous Preston Harriers Athletic Club. Our athletic club has been around for 126 years. We like to call it famous because it is what Brendan Foster calls us on BBC athletic programmes. We are well represented in Track & Field presently by our pride & joy, Helen Clitheroe. We also have some accomplished road runners. Our Fell runners are a mixed bunch of beer drinkers, most fell runners seem to be like that! We do run lots of races, as can be seen in the site itself. We have a world record holder Pete Benson, you can read about his feat inside. We are pleased that you have visited our website, which of course is mainly about fell running. The website is based in Riley Green, where the blogger is also Mayor of Riley Green. If you want to see more about the club, you can visit our main site. Click here |
