Blogger's Cultural Piece on Night Running

Health Warning Night Navigation can be dangerous. I came across this little number from an old fell runner called George Gordon Byron. He later in life became Lord Byron. Nevertheless noble or not, he had his head screwed on about this Night Navigation.

We'll go no more a-roving

By Lord Byron

So, we'll go no more a-roving

 So late into the night,

Though the heart be still as loving,

And the moon be still as bright.

For the sword outwears its sheath,
And the soul wears out the breast,
And the heart must pause to breathe,

And love itself have rest.

Though the night was made for loving,
And the day returns too soon,
Yet we'll go no more a-roving
By the light of the moon.

Can be sung to the tune of Wild Colonial Boy (with difficulty). A little easier to Tangled up in Blue.(Dylan)

Lord Byron (1788-1824) was born in London.  At the time of his birth (christened - 'George Gordon Byron') his parents were in hiding in France from their creditors; but came back especially so that he could be born in England . His father died when he was quite young, and at the age of ten he found himself Lord Byron. He had a title, but very little cash, (at least two things we have in common) as most of the money was tied up in lawsuits; and it was to be some time before his mother secured him a good income. (My mum did almost everything for me, however a good income was one of the few things I never had). He attended Cambridge University, but did little work, but did manage to spend beyond his means and write some poetry. His mother's neighbour encouraged him to publish his poetry,  which he did in 1806 at the age of 18; before spending the next several years on a tour of the Middle East with friends. (my mum's neighbour on Farry Park Estate, later called Dodge City, had an English Bull Terrier. Both he & the dog scared the wits out of me and encouraged  me to avoid them by all means possible).  He returned in 1812, and published the first two Cantos of Childe Harold, which became an overnight sensation; and brought with it the admiration and attention of many women ( one area at least  in which we differ, apart from Angela, see Black Horse above Fri Night 18th)  who Byron would have affairs with. He went on to marry in 1814, and had a daughter, but Byron's frequent infidelities caused strain, and in 1816 his wife asked for and received a formal separation. (My first separation was at about this time). The scandal caused Byron to leave London, and travel around Europe with Percy Shelley; (I did just this with Paddy Deedy, friend of Joe Howard & Maurice Dean) finishing Childe Harold and writing Manfred and starting Don Juan. His adventures also included aiding Italian freedom fighters and later leading a group of Greek freedom fighters in a quest for independence from Turkey. Sadly, despite his heroic, romantic life, he died less boldly in 1824 from a chill from a chill? he received while traveling on horseback during a sudden storm. Manflu again, so long ago? He never even made V40......

The blue bits above are what you call reading between the lines.

Bit of culture gang, its good for you! At least Marie Howard, Eddie Stewart, Chris Smith & our USA readers will appreciate it. Go on, back to your page three now then.

You might like to see that our USA buddies are also into Night Running. Any Juniors will find the owl a bit of fun. Like I do.
