Preston Harriers' fell & trail running section . Some of our fell runners also do cross country and road running, but fell running is our main activity.Fell Running tends to be a Northern sport, the Lake District being the main centre for fell runners. The Harriers are the organizers of Paddy's Pole Fell Race, which usually takes place in June. Our junior fell runners are in a keen fell running section, you can read about them in juniorfellblog below. Preston Harriers running club was established in 1881. Mick McLoughlin the chairman of fellblog did the Bob Graham Round in 2005. Fell Runners are not as much bothered about PB's as they are about 3B's ( a local brewery).

Stanbury Splash Junior Quarry Run - Sunday 28th January 2007

Stanbury Splash Junior Quarry Run

This was my first time at the Stanbury run but I knew what to expect as I had done the quarry runs before, like at Withens. Preston Harriers had picked it as their first championship race. As we drove across the moors the weather got worse and the waves on the reservoir got me thinking. When we parked in the quarry the van felt like it was going to blow over so dad moved it so it was head into the wind. Mum was complaining of feeling sea-sick, but maybe she was just preparing her excuses in case she had a bad run.

By the time we were all waiting down in the quarry it looked like a case of cruelty to children – except we were all smiling! I think the new start is better because there was more room to spread out before scrambling up the steep quarry end and the danger of getting stuck behind a slower runner had gone. I should have told my brother about the change, because all though he is only 11 he sprinted to be first up the scramble and had at least a 5m lead by then! Once over the top things spread out a bit as some people tired and the older ones were sent on a larger loop. I didn’t notice the wind when I was running and couldn’t believe how quickly we were back at the top of the quarry for a great descent and our final climb. Suddenly I had won and when I looked round my little bro was 1st U12 and 3rd in my race. The pressure would be on the adults to perform now. *

Matthew and Christopher both in good descending mode.

We got goody bags as we crossed the line and then more chocolate and Soreen bars at our presentation when the adults race was on. But first I had an extra prize – a chance to start the adult race. They of course start below the steep quarry wall and run out the easy way!  It was a brilliant day out because despite being seen walking on the video mum got a prize too so we went to the pub with 17 other Preston Harriers. By the time we left we had masses of chocolate and Soreen bars in every pocket. I wish we lived closer so we could go to the Bunny Runs.

Matthew Nash

Well done Matthew for this great article

See Senior Race       *  Let's see if the Seniors did perform! This explains what was being said at the start of the Senior Race. Matthew won the right to set us Seniors off in the wind and rain!

Keeping abreast with our Fell Runnners

Lots of fell runners break away from their original running clubs, mainly because they have no interest in track & field, fell running being their main interest. The fell running section of our club decided to have their own website, probably for the same reason. Now a V70, George Arnold is our oldest active fell runner. There are a few more of us close behind! One of our top female road runners, whilst marshalling at Chipping Show Fell Race 2007 commented on just how friendly fell runners are.

Preston Harriers Fell Section :-  FELLBLOG  is the proud fell running section of the famous Preston Harriers Athletic Club. Our athletic club has been around for 126 years. We like to call it famous because it is what Brendan Foster calls us on BBC athletic programmes. We are well represented in Track & Field presently by our pride & joy, Helen Clitheroe.  We also have some accomplished road runners. Our Fell runners are a mixed bunch of beer drinkers, most fell runners seem to be like that! We do run lots of races, as can be seen in the site itself. We have a world record holder Pete Benson, you can read about his feat inside. We are pleased that you have visited our website, which of course is mainly about fell running. The website is based in Riley Green, where the blogger is also Mayor of Riley Green. If you want to see more about the club, you can visit our main site. Click here
