Preston Harriers' fell & trail running section . Some of our fell runners also do cross country and road running, but fell running is our main activity.Fell Running tends to be a Northern sport, the Lake District being the main centre for fell runners. The Harriers are the organizers of Paddy's Pole Fell Race, which usually takes place in June. Our junior fell runners are in a keen fell running section, you can read about them in juniorfellblog below. Preston Harriers running club was established in 1881. Mick McLoughlin the chairman of fellblog did the Bob Graham Round in 2005. Fell Runners are not as much bothered about PB's as they are about 3B's ( a local brewery).

Waugh's Well

13th June 2006 7.15pm

4 miles/ 1000ft climbing

A perfect night for fell running. The clouds and some rain had cleared the air for the Hay Fever sufferers amongst us (me). An excellent turn out of Harriers, including dark horse Willy Garner and one lady only, Karen Nash.

The mini bus was driven by our current star of the Caption Competition, the recovering nicely, but still parabeautically star struck, in spite of all, looking good, John Griffiths. (A nice picture for Sarah.)

Pre race tactics & stretches were done in differing age groups.

Our Top Men. They walked the walk, could they talk the talk?

The race got off to a fine start. I notice that Willie Garner has taken up a position on the front of the grid. Maybe I should try this in future. It obviously helped his race plan, coming in in the first twenty.

Willie flies down a steep section less than a mile from home.

Alan Metcalf second Harrier home

Ash leads a long line of followers as 3rd Harrier home.

Roger running well

Mick Mack has time for a smile.

Karen causes blur, running too fast

John Carberry chasing Karen

Pete Carter negotiates a very steep gulley, chasing Clayton lad.

Dave Simpson fights off the blogger convincingly

Bob Shepherd struggles down the gulley that Pete Carter negotiated without difficulty.

George Arnold flying to the finish to beat 449 with only yards to spare.

Brian cruises in.

I'm sure more precise results will follow, but the Harrier finishers were in the order of photography above. The fabulous photos were taken by our mini bus driver & star of caption competition, John Griffiths.

Personally I was disappointed with my performance. As I walked up the very steep sections, I was forever seeing Dave Simpson running! He ran away from me to such an extent that I was unable to get anywhere near him at the finish.  On my descent I overtook 4 or 5 runners & included a long sprint finish along the road section, finally pipping a young girl more or less on the line.

My biased report should also say that there were 5 Harrier V60's in the race. Is this fact alone a record?

Finally Gordon Thompson had a re-occurrence of his calf niggle & pulled out just as I was starting at the back! I was just getting into some sort of stride along side the V60's & there was Gordon walking back, with an "I'm only here for the beer look on his face" Joe Howard gave the Mountain Rescue an early testing. Within half a mile of the start, his V60 right knee produced enough pain for him to have to resort to blogger's advice at the Pack Horse on our return journey, "better have 3 or 4 pints, that'll help matters".

3 B's Brewery Bobbin Bitter was in fine fettle, & the kindly landlord provided us with free food! Probably the fact that we spent about £100 in twenty minutes helped.

Keeping abreast with our Fell Runnners

Lots of fell runners break away from their original running clubs, mainly because they have no interest in track & field, fell running being their main interest. The fell running section of our club decided to have their own website, probably for the same reason. Now a V70, George Arnold is our oldest active fell runner. There are a few more of us close behind! One of our top female road runners, whilst marshalling at Chipping Show Fell Race 2007 commented on just how friendly fell runners are.

Preston Harriers Fell Section :-  FELLBLOG  is the proud fell running section of the famous Preston Harriers Athletic Club. Our athletic club has been around for 126 years. We like to call it famous because it is what Brendan Foster calls us on BBC athletic programmes. We are well represented in Track & Field presently by our pride & joy, Helen Clitheroe.  We also have some accomplished road runners. Our Fell runners are a mixed bunch of beer drinkers, most fell runners seem to be like that! We do run lots of races, as can be seen in the site itself. We have a world record holder Pete Benson, you can read about his feat inside. We are pleased that you have visited our website, which of course is mainly about fell running. The website is based in Riley Green, where the blogger is also Mayor of Riley Green. If you want to see more about the club, you can visit our main site. Click here
